The journey begins with a drive from Marrakech to Imlil, a charming Berber village nestled in the foothills of the Atlas Mountains. This picturesque village, known as the gateway to Toubkal, is where you’ll meet your guide and muleteer team. After a brief orientation, you’ll start your ascent toward the Toubkal Base Camp.
The trek leads you through lush valleys, terraced fields, and traditional Berber hamlets. You’ll pass through the village of Aroumd and continue along winding trails surrounded by stunning mountain scenery. The route also takes you past the iconic Sidi Chamharouch shrine, a spiritual site that attracts pilgrims and hikers alike. Here, you can take a short break and enjoy the serene atmosphere.
As you climb higher, the landscape becomes more rugged and dramatic. The day’s trek typically takes about 5-6 hours, covering a distance of approximately 11 kilometers (7 miles). You’ll arrive at the Toubkal Base Camp (3,207 meters/10,522 feet) in the late afternoon. Accommodation is provided in a mountain refuge or tents, depending on your preference. After a hearty dinner, you’ll rest in preparation for the summit climb the next day.
The second day begins early, usually around 4:00 AM, to ensure you reach the summit in time to witness a spectacular sunrise. Equipped with headlamps and warm clothing, you’ll embark on the final push to the top. The trail is steep and rocky, requiring a good level of fitness and determination.
As you ascend, the first light of day illuminates the surrounding peaks, creating an awe-inspiring panorama. Reaching the summit of Mount Toubkal is a moment of triumph. From the top, you’ll enjoy unparalleled views of the Atlas Mountains, the Sahara Desert, and the distant horizon.
After soaking in the breathtaking vistas, you’ll begin your descent back to the base camp for a well-deserved breakfast. The return trek to Imlil follows the same route, offering another opportunity to appreciate the stunning landscapes and cultural encounters along the way.
